Cracked Open~~Dark Poetry for the Cruelest Month 2016

Bones are cracked open.
Gaia shudders with her pain.
Man's buildings will fall.

More links to articles and pictures about the damage that fracking causes.

Prompt: Write a poem from Gaia's point of view about the problems she faces.

  1. Every line is a punch in the face. The last line adds a kick to the punch. Short, vivid and extremely powerful, Sharon. So powerful and sad.

  2. Thank you, Magaly! This fracking hits all of my hot buttons. I wanted to make sure that, not only did I write something, but that I provide some info on it for people that don't realize what is happening. Oklahoma now has more earthquakes a year than California, all frack related! Thank you for this opportunity!

  3. Thanks Sharon, for spreading the word about just how serious this is. People who are remote from it may not really understand the way it works, and how devastating it is to the earth. Cracked open indeed, for our petro-crack fix, when we could be developing kinder energies NOW--how long will they pretend fossil fuel can last forever?

    1. I agree, Hedgewitch! Back in 1987, when there were long lines for gas, President Carter called on Detroit to make engines with better gas milage. While we have made some progress, there are still people making a choice to drive Hummers! We are killing our water and land! Thank you for coming by to comment and for the share on Facebook!

  4. Brief, but cutting as a whipcrack. I think the brevity adds a lot to drive the point home. Very strong piece.

  5. Terrible. We've certainly not dealt with the fall out of how fossil fuels (and other commodities/substances too) are gotten on a mass level! People ridiculed Carter and ran to Reagan--wonderful poem. k. (http://manicddaily.wordpress.com)

  6. Power punch! Sharon, I am so angry about the greed that drives big corporations and the fact our government actually AIDS them in destroying the land, to poison the water table, destabilise the structure and integrity of the earths crust so our homes are destroyed and green lights companies who then take no responsibility for the havoc and death that follows! In Austailia big businesseses best friend (at any cost) the Coalition led by banker (with his money stashed in the Caymen Islands) PM Malcolm Turnbull, they are sacking government CSIRO scientists (hired by the last Labor government) that were proving the disasterous effects of not only fracking, but fossil fuels part in destroying our earth for future generations... THE LIBERAL GOVERNMENT SACKED THE MESSENGER AND CHANGED THE LAWS TO GIVE UNOPPOSED RIGHTS TO THE FOSSIL FUEL COPORATIONS!!!! Over our land, over custodial land, truthfully, there are rivers on fire NOW in Australia killing wildlife due to fracking, and the Murdock media is having journos come up with bs excuses and gagging the scientists... There are whole communities in fracking areas experiencing unexplained nosebleeds and livestock dropping dead in the fields...
Yes, hot button, and sharing this information to others, the youth especially who will inherit what is left of this desolate, deserted huge corporate mine we used to call 'earth' is important, to vote out the bankers and the corporate dealers, to know the future lies in breathable air, fertile soil, clean (wind/solar) energy, water that nature provided untainted by poisons... And communities working for the common good, and a brighter future, not just the 1 percent of decadent greed driven faceless entities that profit through the destruction of our (not just theirs) our earth.

    1. You are so right on, Shelle! We, and our mother, Gaia, are being poisoned everyday! And, sadly, as you put it so well in one of your pieces, people only care about what the Kardashians are doing! We must get these corporate puppet politians and their bankers out of power! Would that we had the courage of the people of Iceland! Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

  7. I love this, Sharon! Short and not so sweet. Poignant and evocative in its imagery. I can feel it going through me like the cracks in Gaia's bones. Love you!! Jenny

    1. Thanks for coming by and commenting, Jenny! We are just so addicted to fossil fuels that we are willing to let the corporations and governments to do anything, including ruining our planet and keeping us invoked in perpetual war!

  10. Perfect Sharon!!! It's such a serious issue and I do believe most people do not even know what "fracking" is. Thank you for putting it out there so simply for all to see! Hugs, Rasz

    1. Thank you, Elena! At least now the news is starting to cover this situation. It is such a difficult situation for the people that live there as so many depend on the work. Another example of rushing in for the money before considering all of the consequences.

    1. Thank you so much! It is a hot button issue, for sure. I understand about the jobs that would be lost, but this is a practice that needs to stop. We should have been off fossil fuels decades ago.
