Pied Pipers-Poetry from the Cruelest Month 2016

They play at idiots
these clever men
thinking to lull
those that are awakened,
sensing that they are safe
wearing the cap of a fool.

Folks with partial vision
laugh at the antics of these men
and scoff at the idea
that real harm is forming,
even as they are offended
and aghast,
but smugly secure in their hubris
that this cannot happen...
here.
While those that are blind
by choice
hear through hate filled ears,
slurping down the lies and vitriol
like morning coffee.

These speeches made
from podiums and pulpits
enthrall those that do not want  to see
or believe
that these Pied Pipers
will take us to a place
where a generation will be lost.

It is now not enough
to see with fully open eyes.
We now must see
with fully open hearts.

These was from the prompt "Idiots herding the blind" from William Shakespeare's "Julius Caesar"

  1. Your second stanza speaks of something that has terrified me these last few months. People are so sure in their believes--we are way too enlightened for this nonsense to actually take place here, we are better than that, not in my backyard and so on... And that is scary. Because so many just say the words, but do nothing about them... so in the end, madness might win, and leave open-mouthed in a world raining poo on us. I pray that is not the case.

    Powerful, Sharon.

    1. It took me several days to get what I wanted to do clear in my mind. I sometimes get so angry, but that doesn't solve anything! Thanks for stopping by!

  4. I had such a good education, from both parents and teachers. I was taught both to think and see clearly. It seems that so many nowadays have not been well educated like that.

    1. Education is key! I am so saddened when I see school districts across the U.S. banning books, evolution, etc. We just have to be vocal and not give up! Thank you for commenting, Rosemary!

  5. The tone and mood are perfect to describe these ugly political times. Hubris is perfect. Everything is so polarized, so adversarial. Politicians have completely lost their ability to engage in civil discourse, to act for the greater good. Greed wins again and is never abated except by bloody civil wars. :-\ Nice writing, Sharon, a soulful voice in dark times.

  6. Masterly depicted, "...these Pied Pipers will take us to a place where a generation will be lost." Reminds me of the Pied Piper of Hamelin story, I read as a kid. Brilliant piece of writing, Sharon!

  7. You are on fire with this Sharon, viewing from Oz as the Prime Minister sells off our land, water, food to the highest foreign bidder, with his fortunes safely tucked away in the Caymen Islands I see the public world wide being duped by the bankers as they take away public healthcare, education, services, we need a revolution, so people realise we are all in this together and have the power to create a great future for all, not just those born into entitlement, we need to not feed the greed and start looking after each other. Love this!

    1. I agree, we must wake up! The revelation of the Panama Papers is a great start. It is easy to follow, hard to take a different path! Thanks for sharing and stopping by!

  8. A revolution of love that is. Not love of money, of people.
