We are Sentinels
for the Earth,
holding the soil,
sheltering the deer
and the silky huntress.
We have fed you,
provided refuge,
given safety
from predators
as you sit
in the circle
Of our fire.
In return,
you have poisoned
the very rain
that comes,
left the soil lethal
for seed and sapling.
Now, human,
We are your canary
in the mine.
The prompt is about trees!

That last stanza is very chilling!
ReplyDeleteI feel that it is so true! We have ignored the extinction of so many species, but when the trees go, so will we. Thanks, Rommy!

ReplyDeleteNice and angry. If I was a tree I'd be pissed off at us too. :-)
ReplyDeleteAnd, still they do for us, don't they? Thanks!
DeleteI hope I can at least make the trees in my garden smile a little....it makes me sad to think how badly others are treated XXX
ReplyDeleteIt is sad, isn't it? I am sure you have very happy trees, Gina!
DeleteChilling, indeed, and unfortunately, all too true. I sometimes feel that the natural world, which gives us so much, has become a mad scientist's playground.
ReplyDeleteIndeed!
DeletePowerful!! I love my trees! I call them my babies ;o)
ReplyDeleteI love tree, too, Stacy! I have planted at least one every place I have ever lived!
