Day 12--Keeping Records--NaPoWriMo with Magaly Guerrero 2015

"Lay Your Weary Head to Rest No. 5"
by
Katherine Jeanne Wood

Keeping Records

When Hope died,
she sat down
at her kitchen table
and wrote out all
her Dreams
on slips of paper.
She sealed them
in an envelope,
neatly addressed,
postage attached,
and mailed them
back to herself.
A few days later,
the envelope
arrived in her mailbox.
Carefully, she tucked
it, unopened,
into the box
where she kept
past years tax papers.
This way,
she would always
have proof
of when her life
stopped.

The prompt for today invited us to explore the different topics of Alienation and Detachment.

  1. Oh, Sharon, this nearly broke my heart. The last five lines filled my throat with tears... The speaker's acceptance of the fate that reached her door is one of the saddest things I've read in a long time. I hope she starts a new life...

    1. Thank you for getting it! It came to me in the night and I had to get up and start it so I wouldn't forget the "feel".

  2. The sad acceptance....I have been in a similar place before; this Poem really spoke to me Sharon.

  3. Sometimes, that does seem to be the sanest solution, at least for a while. Thank you for your comment!

    1. It is sad, but maybe it is her way of showing a debt paid, just like the taxes. Maybe, she can find a new life now. Thanks for stopping by, Elena!

  5. I was going to say "How sad", but I found something strangely comforting in her ability to be so caring about herself...but then maybe I am too comfortable in my own self reliance XXX

    1. I am pretty empathic, I think this feeling is in the collective consciousness a lot, lately! I hope you are alright? Thanks for stopping by!

  7. Oh right through my heart...ouch....but I think all is not lost as she is still dreaming and keeping those dreams close by.

    1. You are right, Donna! All she needs to do is open the envelope and let them out, or make new ones.

  8. Oh my goodness. There's something about that "stopped" all by itself. I do hope there is a start to come after.

    1. I think it depends on if she wants to start anew. She seems really tired to me. Thanks for visiting!
